Ferrari 488 Spider |
Ferrari have announced the new Ferrari 488 Spider ahead of its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2015. It’s most powerful ever mid-rear-engined, drop-top V8 car to date, the 488 Spider is packed with technological innovation and cutting-edge design.
The biggest news is the folding hardtop. Ferrari is quick to point out that it was the first manufacturer to introduce the RHT (Retractable Hard Top) on a mid-engined supercar. Compared to a classic soft-top, the RHT is 25 kg lighter and ensures greater comfort. It takes just 14 seconds to deploy.

Underneath, the Ferrari 488 Spider remains largely the same as its Coupe counterpart. With a 3.9 litre turbocharged V8, a maximum power output of 670 CV, maximum torque of 760 Nm at 3000 rpm and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 3 seconds, its not short of performance. To create that classic atmosphere, exhaust headers with longer, equal-length piping and a flat-plane crankshaft have been developed.
In terms of aerodynamics, the Ferrari 488 Spider gets a blown spoiler and an aerodynamic underbody incorporating vortex generators. The electric glass rear wind stop can be adjusted to one of three positions for a blend of comfort and sensation. The Spider’s space frame chassis is constructed from 11 different aluminium alloys for a 23% improvement in stiffness over that of its predecessor.

The Ferrari 488 Spider, like its Coupe counterpart, was developed using a sophisticated simulator. It helped develop the car even before prototypes had been built. Electronic systems such as the SSC2 Side Slip Angle Control System also assist in creating 12% faster acceleration out of corners than the 458 Spider.
