All-New 2016 Chevy Cruze to be lighter, more efficient

General Motors Co. on Wednesday said its next generation 2016 Chevrolet Cruze will be lighter, have more passenger room and be more efficient than the car it replaces when it goes on sale early next year.

The automaker will reveal the car at a special media event June 24 in Detroit. The car will get more features, new powertrains and new technologies, and GM says it will “bring a higher level of sophistication to the compact car segment.”

GM North America President Alan Batey said the car has an “aggressive, stunning design” and is larger than the previous car with two inches more rear legroom. The next gen Cruze will get a new 1.4-liter turbo engine, Batey said.

“This is a very, very important car for us,” Batey said.

Chevy said the Cruze is the bowtie brand’s top selling car globally and sales since 2011 have topped 3.5 million sales around the world.

“When we introduced the Cruze it replaced 15 other compact vehicles around the globe,” Batey, said in a statement. “By consolidating design, engineering and marketing efforts, we were able to produce an award-winning, value-driven sedan that won over customers around the world.”

The Cruze replaced the Chevrolet Cobalt in the United States. Chevrolet sells the Cruze in 115 countries and top markets include China, the U.S., Brazil and Canada.
