 Toyota upends the small, newly competitive mid-size truck segment with the beefier-looking 2016 Tacoma, to be unveiled at the Detroit auto show Monday.

Toyota's tight-lipped about details until then, but speculation is that it'll get a new, more modern V-6 as the top engine.

The automaker hints at better off-road capability -- in a truck already well-known for its grit when the pavement runs out -- and updated technology.

That's to be expected because the truck's not been seriously changed for about 10 years.

General Motors' Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon are newly in the mid-size market, as GM tries to take sales away from Toyota by fielding trucks with most modern amenities and good payload ratings.

Tacoma had gotten crude and outdated, and the new one will need to be first-rate to stay ahead of the GM pickups.
