 It's based on the underpinnings of the Mazda2, and looks like the current CX-5 left in the dryer for 20 minutes too long and then given a proper pressing with starch.

That's not a bad thing. It's got the same flared fenders, packs 18-inch wheels in its top-spec trim, and that blacked out D-pillar gives a cool wrap-around effect to the hatch. It's about 8.5 inches longer than the 2 and around 3 inches wider, with a wheelbase that's around five inches shorter than the Mazda3.

The Mazda CX-3's powertrain line-up includes the SKYACTIV-D 1.5-litre clean diesel and SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre direct-injection petrol engine. Together with the availability of Mazda's new-generation AWD system, each engine delivers powerful and linear driving performance with remarkably low emissions. 

To enhance the customer's driving pleasure, the new model also offers a wide range of Mazda's latest technologies, including the MZD Connect in-car connectivity system and i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety features.

Two engines are available: the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre petrol engine, available in two power versions, and the SKYACTIV-D 1.5-litre clean diesel. Both deliver linear, powerful driving performance and excellent real-world fuel economy.

Both automatic and manual transmissions are available. The SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission achieves excellent fuel economy, a direct feel similar to that of a manual transmission, and smooth and powerful acceleration. The SKYACTIV-MT is a lightweight, compact six-speed manual transmission that delivers a light and positive shift-feel while also enhancing fuel economy.

The new-generation AWD system employing the active torque control coupling first used on the Mazda CX-5 is available to achieve excellent drivability and vehicle stability. It employs the world's first front wheel slip warning detection system, which uses sensor signals to accurately monitor the driver's intentions and constantly changing driving conditions. In addition, the CX-3 uses a power take-off and a newly developed rear differential unit that is compact and lightweight.
