New Fiat Tipo: Fiat Aegea will take the Tipo name

Fiat is returning to the C-segment family hatchback market with an new Fiat Tipo based on the Aegea saloon

Fiat will turn back time next year, by reviving the Tipo name for its new Ford Focus-rivalling family hatchback. The company revealed the Aegea saloon earlier his year, and while that car will be launched in Turkey, a spin-off hatch and estate will be sold in Europe, sharing the same styling but wearing the Tipo badge.

A source told Auto Express the five-door Tipo will arrive in September 2016. It’ll be available in 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol guises, as well as 1.3 and 1.6 diesels. Standard kit should include a five-inch colour touchscreen with Bluetooth and Fiat’s Uconnect system, and a small range of optional extras such as sat-nav and rear parking camera.

It’ll mark Fiat’s fresh attack on the family hatch class. The brand enjoyed success with the original Tipo in the early nineties, which continued later in the decade with the stylish Bravo/Brava. The more recent Stilo and Bravo didn’t repeat the success, though, and sales dwindled.

New Fiat Aegea

Fiat is well into the testing process of its new Tipo. Our spies have already caught a heavily camouflaged mule on test, and while the car poaches parts from various other Fiat models for development use, the car’s practical five-door hatchback body is clear to see.


Meanwhile, our source also revealed that Fiat will join the pick-up market too. It’s readying a Volkswagen Amarok rival and will reveal it in Dubai next year. It won’t be version of the recently teased Fiat Toro pick-up which is for the South American market. Instead it’ll use the new Mitsubishi L200 as its base with our source revealing “just the plastic parts” will be changed to differentiate the Fiat version.
