Peugeot 208 BlueHDI sets fuel consumption record

A Peugeot 208 BlueHDi 100 S&S has set a new long-distance fuel consumption record in France for a standard production vehicle by covering a distance of 2,152 kilometers (1,337 miles) with just 43 liters (9.45 UK gallons) of Diesel fuel.

This means the car averaged just 2 l/100 km (141.2 mpg UK or 117.6 mpg US). However, the test wasn’t carried out on public roads, it took place on the Peugeot test circuit at Belchamp in France.

Supervised by the French Type Approval Authority, UTAC (Union Technique de l’Automobile, du motocycle et du Cycle), the test featured a standard production Peugeot 208 equipped with the 1.6-liter BlueHDi 100 S&S engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox, which covered the distance in 38 hours as several drivers took their turn at the wheel for 3 to 4 hours each.

The Peugeot 208 tested was a “Very Low Fuel Consumption” version which features an aerodynamic rear spoiler and ultra-low rolling resistance Michelin Energy Saver+ tyres. The car’s official combined fuel economy is 3 l/100 km (94.2 mpg UK or 78.4 mpg US), with corresponding CO2 emissions of 79 g/km.
