2016 Toyota Hilux pickup truck: New 177HP Diesel

One of the most iconic Toyota vehicles, with over 16 million units sold in more than 180 countries and regions since the first-generation model launched in 1968, the Hilux is best-known for its toughness.

Toyota says it has improved the 2016 Hilux’s characteristic ruggedness and performance, as well as focusing more on the comfort of the passengers and making it easier to drive.

During development, Toyota used feedback received directly from Hilux drivers, with engineers concluding that the new Hilux should not only be tougher but also reduce stress as much as possible compared with the previous model.

As a result, the new Hilux features improved ride comfort, a quiet cabin and enhanced cruising range thanks to improved fuel efficiency. The 2016 Toyota Hilux features a newly developed frame and suspension, with upgraded leaf springs and shock absorbers. Three types of suspension specification will be on offer: standard, heavy duty (for heavy loads) and comfort (mainly for driving on paved roads).

Under the hood, the 2016 Hilux unveiled in Thailand features a new 2,755cc diesel engine rated at 177hp and 450Nm (332lb-ft) between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Toyota says the engine produces significantly improved torque at low speed, reduced noise and delivers improved fuel efficiency.

Depending on the market, Toyota will also offer a 2.4-liter turbodiesel with 160hp and 400Nm (295lb-ft), as well as two petrol engines: a 2.7-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated unit with 164hp and a 4.0-liter six-cylinder unit with 278hp. Besides the new six-speed automatic, Toyota will also offer a six-speed manual gearbox.
