Porsche has chosen the New York Auto Show to stage the world premiere of their new lightweight Boxster Spyder, the most hardcore version of the series to date.

This is a purist's car offered exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission that replaces the regular Boxster's more elaborate and heavier foldable cloth top for a simpler, manually operated fabric roof - albeit released electrically through the rear deck.

It also does away with the radio and air conditioning system in order to reduce weight, but if you insist, Porsche does offer them ex-factory as optional equipment at no extra cost.

The Porsche 718 Spyder-inspired streamlined bulges that extend down along the long rear lid behind the headrests and the front and rear ends borrowed from the Cayman GT4, along with the new lightweight sport seats and the new steering wheel inside, round out the cosmetic updates.

Under the skin, Porsche fitted the Boxster Spyder with a stiffer and 20mm lowered sports suspension, 911 Carrera-sourced brakes and a 3.8-liter flat-six with an output of 375PS (370hp) that allows the open-top model to hit 100km/h (62mph) in 4.5 seconds and top out at 290km/h (180mph).
