New Volkswagen Sport Coupé Concept GTE

These official design sketches show Volkswagen’s new Sport Coupé Concept GTE ahead of its official unveiling at the Geneva motor show next week.

The car is understood to provide clues as to the look of Volkswagen’s CC replacement, which will form part of the eighth-generation Passat range when it goes on sale towards the end of this year. It also shows off Volskwagen's new design language.


From these design sketches, we can see that while the CC concept remains close to the standard Passat, its styling features include a wide grille running the width of the car, with prominent lower air vents integrated into the front bumper.



At the rear, the swept-back design features a prominent boot lip with dual exhaust exits.

VW design boss Walter de Silva said: "This concept is based on Volkswagen design DNA, which has been visibly sharpened even more. It shows how the highest-volume brand of our Group is shaping the immediate future."

While official powertrain details are yet to be revealed, Volkswagen has reportedly confirmed the CC concept is powered by a turbocharged petrol engine in conjunction with two electric motors. An “innovative” four-wheel drive system is also promised.

Inspiration for the powertrain is likely to come from the Passat GTE, which made its debut at the Paris motor show last year. The petrol-electric hybrid - which mates a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor - is capable of returning up to 141mpg.

Given the upmarket push taken by the standard Passat, it’s likely that the new CC will continue that trend, taking the fight to rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A5 Sportback. Indeed, Volkswagen has said the new car will be positioned "above" the outgoing CC.

Head of vehicle development Heinz-Jakob Neusser said the new car is "an impressive alternative to the classic saloons of the B and C segments."
