When the big block Shelby Cobra came onto the scene early in 1965, it wasn’t just a sports car contender, it was a veritable street-sweeper of performance cars.
The 427ci Cobra trounced both its American and European competition across the nation’s circuits and drag strips, and now you can own one of these historic 427s, complete with a Shelby-issued 1965 MSO.
The 50 rarified roadsters will be made to order per customer from the Shelby American factory, donning either aluminum or fiberglass bodies.
The aluminum-bodied 427 shines under a nice polish, optioned with or without stripes, while the fiberglass-bodied car appears in Guardsman Blue paint with Wimbledon White stripes.
All models come with special 50th Anniversary badging and documentation cementing their spot amongst the 343 original cars in the Shelby ‘World Registry.’
Underneath those iconic and striking body lines, the 2015 Cobras adopt the same suspension setup and interior effects as their 1960′s predecessors, though with a few critical 21st century upgrades, including chompy OD/Shelby discs and dual piston calipers in the front and rear, as well as a reinforced steel frame.
Worth a mention, the cars are delivered as rolling chassis, sans engine and transmission. Conceivably, you could stuff any number of powertrains underneath, though if you expect any return on investment within the next 50 years, it better be a 427ci big block.
The price for these rarified 427 Cobra ‘rollers’? A fiberglass-bodied Cobra will run you $119,995, while an aluminum-bodied model will cost $179,995. These 50th Anniversary editions will make their grand entry at the upcoming Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, on January 13.
