The Q7 retains its pair of 3.0-liter turbodiesel and gas engines, good for 272 horsepower and 333 horsepower, respectively. However, thanks to 716 pounds of weight shedding, the new Q7 will rocket to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds and up to a limited top speed of 155 mph. If that’s not enough oomph for you, a Q7 e-tron quattro version is in the works, which adds a plug-in hybrid system to the diesel engine for a combined output of 373 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Audi claims an eco-friendly 138.4 mpg with the hybrid, 34.8 miles of electric-only range, and a zero to 60 mph sprint of just 6.0 seconds. The US and Asian markets will also get the ubiquitous 2.0-liter TFSI engine, tuned for 252 horsepower.
Weighing in at 4,398 pounds, the Q7 is still quite a hefty brute, but some of its tucked away features ought to help it negotiate the bendy bits. Audi continues its optional adaptive air-suspension and adds a hallmark of certain ‘90s Asian sports cars – all-wheel steering. The optional feature will adjust the rear wheels up to five degrees for slow-speed turns and follows the movement of the front wheels at high speeds.
Inside, Audi packs in its second-generation infotainment system, complete with Android and Apple CarPlay connectivity, four-zone air conditioning, LTE WiFi, rear-seat entertainment screens, and the group’s techy ‘all-in-touch’ touchscreen. It’s a big Audi; surely there are enough gadgets to play with.
Back to that issue of styling – we’ve got to admit it looks quite good. The Q7 adopts a TT-esque front fascia with its disapproving LED lights and angular grille. Towards the back, the Q7 rounds off with its familiar raked D-pillars. Overall, it’s masculine but also pretty at the same time; an ‘S line’ exterior package will also be available.
