2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class SUV Specs

Mercedes-Benz has tried for years to project a more youthful image and appear more in tune with the wants and needs of a younger market segment. The GLA, along with the $30,000 CLA provide an affordable entry point into the world of Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
Smallest of member M-B's prolific SUV/crossover group, the new GLA-Class matches style with capability. It uses the same modular architecture as the new 2014 M-B CLA-Class sedan.
The upright front end with the prominent 5-point star makes the GLA instantly recognizable. Sporty highlights and the twin-louver grille accentuate the vehicle's width. For those who really want to be noticed, an illuminated star is available

Bi-Xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights and tri-functional fiber-optics give the GLA a recognized iconic light signature. The standard fog lamps are integrated into the front bumper. A simulated skid plate and contrasting dark-grey sill panels all-around emphasize the SUV characteristics.

To the typical crossover customer, style matters a lot, and the GLA with its curvaceous body definitely turns heads. At 173.9 inches long, 71.0 inches wide, and 58.8 inches tall, the 5-occupant GLA-class has ideal dimensions for a city car. Rear-passenger room is sufficient for only two adults and short trips. Even small children might not be comfortable there.

Benz’s MB-Tex synthetic leather is the standard upholstery, while the real thing is available as an option. The dash panel can be specified in aluminum, or a choice in wood finishes: high-gloss or an exquisite matte. Galvanized switchgear creates a premium look that’s suggestive of more-upmarket vehicles.

The GLA comes in two engine-defined models. The GLA250 uses the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four that’s found in the CLA250. It’s a smooth and quiet powerplant, which produces 208 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque from 1200 rpm. The GLA45 uses a 2.0-liter AMG hand-built turbocharged four. This premium engine benefits from 26.i psi of turbo boost to produce 355 horsepower and 332 lb.ft. of torque, along with a satisfying exhaust note.
With either engine, power goes to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The 2015 GLA is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV to be available with the new- generation all-wheel drive system 4MATIC, with fully variable torque distribution.

Mercedes says that the all-wheel drive GLA45 accelerates to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, and tops out at 145 mph. Fuel-economy for the GLA250 and GLA45 are 24/27/32 and 23/25/29 mpg respectively.
Front struts and wishbones team with a four-link design at the rear, all featuring rigid yet lightweight components with firmer spring and damping rates and a more aggressive, lowered stance. That all might be just fine for the racing set, but a “comfort” setting in our test car produced a ride quality that bordered on “harsh”.

Mercedes touts the GLA’s steering as rack-and-pinion with electromechanical power assist. Regardless, the steering is so heavily weighted (supposedly for better road feel) that driving for only a few hours becomes tiresome.
Mercedes has loaded the GLA with a full complement of the latest telematics and assistance systems. M-B’s latest-generation telematics platform, mbrace2, offers connectivity and the infotainment features we’ve come to expect in any upscale car. In a bold move by Mercedes, all of that information is displayed on an i-pad–like screen attached atop the instrument panel.

Mercedes’ Collision Prevention Assist provides autonomous braking from speeds of up to 124 mph if the system detects an imminent collision—the system works only at speeds up to 18 mph if the object you’re about to collide with is stationary. The standard Benz offerings of blind-spot detection, lane-keeping, park assist, and adaptive cruise control all are available.

The GLA looks good and performs well, but with its hard ride, heavy steering and cramped interior, the GLA is properly targeted toward a youthful market—those with little automotive experience.
Prices start at $33,300, but expect to pay much more for the most desirable options.
